Omega-class Destroyer

By John David Cook

This is the Warp Miniatures Babylon 5 Earthforce Cruiser, Agamemnon. It is a 200+ part resin and metal kit that took about a year to complete. Each piece had to be cleaned by hand with a needle file to remove pour stubs and then washed several times with dish detergent and then rubbed with alcohol to completely remove all the mold release and resin oil residue.

This is my first resin kit (really!) and the kit instructions are pretty good for resin. You get two pages of moderately detailed instructions that are really do tell you were all the parts go. Assembly was straightforward using superglue. For added strength, I used a small drill and wire pins to pin the larger parts together. The engine assembly required considerable pining but the result is a very strong assembly that isnt going to fall apart. Air bubbling was minimal and I used super glue to fill in those holes.

Painting was done carefully, after very throughly removing all mold release and all the somewhat oily residue from the resin itself by wiping with alcohol. I used testors gray primer first, followed by testors Gunship gray for most of the body. The fusion engine bells got the same primer but then I used blue metallic for a base color, then some dark red metallic over the middle to re-create the look of over heated metal. Dappling with some thinned black metallic gave it a worn look.

I wanted to recreate the "paneled" look of the original so I painted a sheet of clear decal film with the same base coat as the ship, then streaked it with slightly darker and lighter paint and then diced the sheet into tiny panels.

Each panel became its own tiny decal which was applied with tweasers. Next time I think I'll try using a painting mask!

After decaling, a thin black wash was applied, then a coat of Testors Dull Coat laquer.

The stand is my own work, made of cut and soldered brass tubing on a finished oak base.

The final result is impressive and took 3rd place in Sci-Fi at GraniteCon 2004.
