Spider-Man

By Sean Carter

Here's my just-completed Spider-Man kit. I don't know anything about the original model, this was a recast that I bought on eBay. I was a little hesitant to purchase this kit as I've had generally poor results from other leaps of faith where involving recasts. Luckily, the quality was outstanding and well worth the price I paid for a subject as hard to find as Spidey.

I washed all the parts, trimmed them and went to work gluing the sub-assemblies together. There were only ten parts altogether, so it went fairly quickly and I soon had two arms, two legs and a torso. The only fit problems I ran into were attaching the legs to the torso. There were some awful gaps that I filled and sanded down after gluing without too much trouble. Everything else could be positioned and glued with CA just the way I wanted. Very few surface flaws to deal with, and those that I did encounter didn't live long after their appointment with the Dremel.

I painted the model entirely by hand with Testors acrylics - Gloss Black, Blue and Red. The webbing was all drawn in with a fine-point Sharpie (my eyes are still crossed). I might give it a flat clear coat at some point, but I like it the way it is for now - he looks like he jumped right out of an animation cel. Total build time was about 12 hours over 2 weeks.

This is only my third vinyl figure kit, and I'm very happy with the results. I bought a first-movie Batman from the same buyer, I can't wait to jump into that next!
