Polar Lights BttF DeLorean

By Ken Rice

I already have a Die Cast Mr Fusion model so I wanted to make this one the Lightning Rod version with the rod and Brass clock on the dash.

The biggest problem with this kit is the lack of details for the interior. I carved off the “Time circuits” which were a grey bump and made my own out of Sculpy. Then I covered it in a piece of thin clear styrene. I also added the handle and a few buttons to that area as well as put a knob on top of the gear shift.

Next I cut the base off of the Brass clock and glued it directly to the dash (otherwise it would look like the clock was on a separate stand) and added the speedometer gauge (for the 88 miles per hour LED) out of a piece of sprue. The flux capacitor and dash both were put "under glass" with some more clear styrene and some wire was added to the rear to stand in for hose.

The rear fusion reactor I painted flat black, then, after watching and screen capturing as many close-ups of the area in the movie, I picked out the details. I also added wire coils to certain parts.

For the main body I toned down the stainless steel look with charcoal powder rubbed on and clear coated. Then, following screen caps from the movie, I painted the exterior details in aluminum, gloss grey, matte and gloss black. The rear lights were a bit tricky, I ended up slopping in the Red, orange and white then going back over the raised edges with a fine tip marker. Finally I applied the one decal – the license plate – of course, I went with the “outatime”.
