Polar Lights 1950's Batmobile

By Ken Rice

Here’s the Polar Lights 1950’s Comic book Batmobile - it has a die cast with a pre-painted outer chassis so nothing interesting to do there. The interior, however, has lots to do. Overall I really enjoyed this kit. I’m pleased with my wood effects and the spot gloss parts. It was the first time I got to use my new compressor as well.

This version of the car has a Crime lab in the back, along with a detailed front dash. I decided to paint the interior burgundy for reasons unknown even to myself.... The dash is flat black, the various dials are washed in white with the needle and some other details done in pencil crayon, then they were coated in a thick gloss coat to make them appear to be under glass. For one of the 2 TV screens I attempted to replicate the map used on the crime lab desk – it’s rather soft looking due to the soft pencil crayons.

For the Crime lab I first painted the desk and other wood surfaces brown and drew the wood grain with pencil crayon, that was then gloss coated. The kit came with a map that was just a detailed piece of plastic – too thick really (the map’s story is from an actual Batman comic where Robin is analyzing a torn map from some villain). I decided to print out a scaled down map off the computer (mapquest locating my home) and use it instead. I folded it into a map pattern then tore it. It was adhered with white glue , then the ruler and pencil were placed on top (still pegged into their determined areas) For the various flasks and test tubes I painted the bottoms or backsides (depending on the viewing surface); this gave them the appearance of having liquid in them. The microscope was painted in gloss and flat black and silver. I guess it’s unfortunate that most of this detail is barely seen in the final product.

The undercarriage is also detailed. I airbrushed the entire area flat black then I dry brushed the details in steel. Parts like the suspension were steel with a dark wash.
