USS Coventry

By Gil Brumana

This is Starship Modeler's own Detroyant Class Heavy Destroyer conversion kit. I saw it on the website and just had to get one because it looked so damn interesting. A good value, it did have some issues. The main one was the fit of the PL's saucer section to the Conversion's secondary hull.... it fit well but the alinement was off quite a bit. If you held the secondary hull straight, the saucer section had a pronounced nose down attitude. I did not know if this was a flaw in my copy, or what. I didn't think there was any way to heat the secondary hull and bend it to correct the problem as it is quite a thick piece of resin. So I ended up just glueing the parts together as is and then fudged the pylons and engines to compensate for the angles.

I also shaved off the three detail pieces from the back of the conversion hull and modified the Polar Lights kit's impulse deck to fit there instead. Other wise, the ship would not have had any impulse engines. Speaking of engines, I did not follow the instructions with how the PL's warp nacelles should be attached to the pylons. I just thought they looked wrong with the grills going kinda down, and all the other details looking skewed. So, I filled in the existing slots, and cut new ones in the upper part of the nacelles to keep the engines in the correct orientaion to the body.

Now that the hard parts were done the kit was sprayed with Pewter Gray, and detailed with darker grays. The conversion supplyed decals were nice, but when I tried to use them they litteraly disintegrated as I tried to get them from the sheet to the model. I ended up using a combination of the Polar Lights decals and JT Graphics Kit Bashers sheet decals. After the decals were on, the entire model was sprayed with dull coat.

Editor's Note: We had a problem with a small part of one batch of decals - bad paper. There was no way to tell before hand which ones would work. Anyone who gets one of these bad sheets can get a free replacement sheet (from a different batch!) simply by contacting me.

A nice, and different starship to be sure.... I would like to try to figure out a way to fix that secondary hull..... maybe I'll get another on ..... and.....
