TIE/Long Range Scout

By Paul Mather

The TIE/ Long Range Scout is designed for deep space scouting and reconnaissance. The ship is equipped with Hyperdrive and has fuel and supplies for extended duration missions. The scout is equipped with the latest in stealth technology. 3 Crew typically man this ship, each has a small private berth with a shared living area. The cockpit is placed forward and crew take shifts in manning the craft. The ship has very limited armaments as it is built for speed, stealth and range.

The Model

The model was constructed with tried and tested scratchbuilding techniques. The main hull comprises two plastic wine glasses left over from an office party, the cockpit is a medicine cup from a brief stay in hospital. I used components from the Darth Vader tie fighter as well as various tank and car parts.

The main hull was extended using sheet styrene graced with supporting struts. I was originally going to use the Darth Vader TIE wings but I decided this was far too contrived and decided to scratch new ones using sheet styrene scribed appropriately. I went for a very sleek shape to try and add a sense of speed to the craft.

I scratchbuilt a cockpit into the meds cup and went to town with lots of little fiddly details, screens, buttons and controls all printed onto Jetcal transfer paper on my inkjet.

I primed all over with grey primer and then sprayed the ship that distinctive TIE blue/grey. Panels were painted flat black and I used light pastelling to subtly change some panel colours and to add a slightly weathered look.
