Gothlorr Class Battlecruiser

By Jay Smith

While building my Klingon Negh'Var cruiser, I had used the bridge section from a spare Ertl Vor'cha model and now had an almost complete kit, minus one bridge. I didn't want to just waste the parts so I figured I'd come up with some way of using them. My idea was to build a ship which would incorporate different design elements from all the previous Klingon vessels that had appeared over the years.

I started by cutting off most of the short wings that held the engine and their pylons and then I glued the main body together and covered over the holes that were left with styrene. I then took the impulse wedge, which I thought would make a good command section and glued it to the front of the main body.

My favourite of all the Klingon ships is the Bird Of Prey so I designed my model to have a pair of large hanging wings, which I built from styrene and then blended into the existing hull.

Although I was using the engines that had come with the kit I didnt want them to look the same as the ones on the Vor'cha class, so I made a minor alteration, by cutting out the centre section on both engines and replacing them with strips of ribbed plastic that blended well with the clear parts which had come with the kit.

Next I began to design the rear of the ship using elements from the old battlecruiser's that had appeared in the tv show and films. I built up a large box like area on top of the existing hull and tapered it at the front. I added two rectangular pods to either side of the newly built up section giving it a vague battlecruiser look. I figured that these pods could detach from the main ship and be used to ferry a large number of Klingon warriors to a particular target,

I originally planned to keep the Battlecruiser "look" going with the command section, by building a bridge tower similar to the ones on the old ships. I built up a small cylinder and then capped it off with a dome and then began to build up a lower, rounded command area.

Once done I hated it! The bridge looked to tall and really didn't go well with the rest of the design So I cut off all the parts I had glued on and started again. Looking through the spares box I came across one of the wings from the Star Wars droid fighters. Rather than use the whole thing which would be to big, I cut it in half, sealed off the back with styrene and added it to the model. Using some model putty I filled in the small gap in the front and now I had the bridge. Granted the whole battlecruiser idea had gone out the window and the command section now resembled a Bird Of Prey, (so much for trying to incorporate different design elements!!) so I carried this on with the underside of the command section. Rather than adding a forward torpedo tube I took the two side guns from the Star Wars Droid Tank and stuck them back to back. I then added these to the bottom of the command hull and built up two curved sections on either side.

The paint scheme for this model was the same as on the Negh'Var, a basic coat of forest green with some panelling done in matt red and details in gun metal. A thin mix of black and paint thinners was used for the weathering.

I always liked the aggressive posture of the Klingon ships such as the Bird Of Prey and the Negh'var and its something that I hope I was able to put into my ship.
