This my build up of AMT/ERTL's Vinyl Rancor kit. This was my first
attempt at building both a vinyl kit and figure kit. It's built
straight out of the box without any modifications. The legs and lower
torso were filled with plaster for stability and the seams filled with
Tamiya epoxy putty. The whole thing was painted with Tamiya paints
using a combination of airbrushing and drybrushing. I began with a
base coat of dark brown, with shadows filled in with a darker brown
and a few of the highlights airbrushed lighter brown I also added some
other colours like green to give the skin some variation. I then
drybrushed a lighter brown over the bumps and wrinkles and warts,
followed by a very dark wash for the nooks and crannies, this helped
to bring out the details and create the illusion of depth. The bony
protrusion's such as claws teeth and spines were painted a dirty
tabacco brown, with a lighter brown drybrushed on, followed by an off
white, followed by just a touch of white, and then with an almost
black wash for the grooves. This technique gave them an almost sickly,
yet worn look that I wanted.
The Gamorean Guard was painted using the same techniques. I was quite
pleased with the way it turned out overall.
