EggWing

by Joe Brown

Scale: Not stated

There are stories, dating back to the legendary pre-Republic days, of a fierce race of warriors who flew egg-shaped fighters (actually, they were cones, flown by Conehead Conquest Fleet pilots, but that’s a whole nuther story). These stories are really, really false, and not even worth a Sci-Fi Channel screenplay effort.

I had some cool ideas on what to enter in this contest, like most of us did. I also kept putting off actually building those cools ideas into finished models, like most of us did. While scrambling for a last-minute desperation effort, I discovered a jpeg that someone on the message board had once posted a link to: a Scratchbuilt Egg X-wing.

Now, that I could get behind and push; and push I did! I used foamed polystyrene board to carve a fuselage. Then, after applying a talcum powder release barrier, I mixed up some two-part epoxy putty and let it cure overnight on the foam. OK, doing the right side and then the left side meant two nights, but, that also gave me time to grab a yard sale find from the parts box.

The yard sale snap X-wing fell victim to my demonic Dremel tool, equipped with its vicious saw attachment, and rather quickly, I had the wing, engines, and guns.

The cured putty easily separated from the polystyrene fuselage, giving me two very tough putty fuselage sections. Those were superglued together, and sanded smooth.

The guns were really, really terrible, so, brass tubing of the appropriate diameters was also quickly chopped to length, and fitted, along with the flashback guard thingies. A new nose was quickly whipped into shape from ‘For Sale’ sign plastic, and then all the rest of the parts were nudged, trimmed, sanded, and glued to one another.

Painting was done with spray gray sandable primer, and then, spray Krylon Crème White, Testors Acrylic Gloss Black, Bob Ross Flat Black Gesso, Apple Barrel Naphtha Crimson, and a Fine Point Green Sharpie.

Thus, the end result: a more than somewhat goofy but still darned cool X-wing parody. The Egg-Wing lives!
