Slave 1

by Richard Kelly

Scale: 1/72

This model Represents two "firsts" for me, it's the first sci-fi kit I've ever made (apart from knocking together a couple of WH40K kits for my brother) and the first time I've ever entered a contest.

The kit is Fine Molds latest offering built straight OOTB. This is a straightforward enough build so I'll skip the details and tell you a bit about my favourite part of modelling, the painting and weathering...

I painted the model using Tamiya's superlative range of acrylics, preshading then using maskol and multiple light oversprays of slightly varying shades to help create the chipped and worn paint effect. Some additional line detail was done with fine airbrush work. I then used a series of filters to help harmonise the overall tone of the model. Weathering was achieved using pin washes of Windsor & Newton oils, plus dragging oil spots to create oil, oxidisation, dirt stains etc. The cockpit received a light dry brushing using humbrol enamels and the entire model is finished with some localised pigments and graphite.

Thanks to the cool choice of subject, the quality of the FM kit, and the weathering potential, I have thoroughly enjoyed this build and am very pleased with my results. As I said at the beginning, this is my first Star Wars kit but I'm pretty sure it won't be my last!
