This is Astronaut Lucinda Weisbach doing some extreme geology in the Vallis
Marineris on Mars. This model is a slight modification of the Gemini
Astronaut that comes with the Revell kit Astronaut with MMU. I got this kit
when I visited Kennedy Space Center and then lost interest in it when I
realized that the Astronaut was totally inappropriate for the rest of the
kit. So the model sat around for a few years. There are a number of
paintings I have seen showing Astronauts climbing on Martian cliffs so I
decided to make my own version of this oft-visited theme.
I used the
Astronaut and backpack from the kit and used photographs of Spacesuits used
by volunteers working at the Mars Society’s Mars Desert Research Station
as a painting guide.
