Dedicated Geochemist

by Kieran Griffith

Scale: 1/5.5

This is Astronaut Lucinda Weisbach doing some extreme geology in the Vallis Marineris on Mars. This model is a slight modification of the Gemini Astronaut that comes with the Revell kit Astronaut with MMU. I got this kit when I visited Kennedy Space Center and then lost interest in it when I realized that the Astronaut was totally inappropriate for the rest of the kit. So the model sat around for a few years. There are a number of paintings I have seen showing Astronauts climbing on Martian cliffs so I decided to make my own version of this oft-visited theme.

I used the Astronaut and backpack from the kit and used photographs of Spacesuits used by volunteers working at the Mars Society’s Mars Desert Research Station as a painting guide.

The only additions were some extra equipment such as box, mini armtop and geologist's hammer. The patch decals depict the logos of Canadian Space Agency, European Space Agency, Russian Space Agency and NASA on the back of the suit. I used the logo of The Mars Society as the mission patch that is on the back of the suit and on the left arm. The base is made of two blocks of wood with layers of ceiling and plasterboard stacked on top of each other and covered with a layer of paper mache to give the impression of sedimentary rock.

After painting I gave it a lot of weathering to cover Lucinda with Mars dirt from all the hard work she would be doing on Mars.
